Avatar The movie follows the adventures of Jake Sully, a wheelchair-bound ex-marine, who is called upon to go on a radical mission with the promise of getting his legs back upon completion. The mission: to navigate a lush new world, gain the trust of its inhabitants (the native group called Na’vi), and get out when the Marine handlers say to get out.

Jake and other marines enter this lavish world, Pandora, by way of Avatars made in their images. The human Marine links with their Avatar, a clone developed using Human DNA and native Na’vi DNA, which activates their “other” body to function as a Na’vi native.

Humans are unable to breathe Pandora’s air, but the Avatars are able to breathe Pandora’s air. Through his Avatar, Jake is also able to walk again. He envisions this quest into this new world as a fresh start. On his mission to gain the trust of the Na’vi, Jake’s character is tested as he gets close to one particular Na’vi, Neytiri, and gains her trust. As his attachment to Neytiri grows stronger it jeopardizes the Marine’s entire operation, to detach the Na’vi from the valuable mineral deposits on their land.

Jake’s fascination with Pandora and the Na’vi people is evident to the Marine handlers. They need to be sure he hasn’t “gotten lost in the woods.” On the base they inquire whether he “Forgot what team you were playing for.”

Jake’s connection to the Na’vi is more fantastic than he expected. He feels like he belongs there with them. He walks the lines between Marine, Avatar, and Na’vi until he’s faced with the defining moment of truth – the Na’vis come under attack, and he tells the Na’vi, “We will send them a message that this, this is our land!” He makes his choice and rallies the Na’vis.
