Chicago Bears picked quarterback Dan LeFevour

The Chicago Bears picked quarterback Dan LeFevour in the sixth round of the nfl draft. Whether or not this pick continues the recent draft-day ineptitude of the current Chicago Bears management team remains to be seen. There is, at the very least, a local “feel good” aspect to this particular story with the kid being a product of nearby Naperville, Illinois. Additionally LeFevour seems to have decent size and athletic ability to be molded into a credible quarterback in the nfl. Ron Jaworski made mention of the fact that Mike Martz is the new offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears and could possibly help develop LeFevour into a legitimate quarterback in this league. Also “Jaws” alluded to the fact that Martz was possibly in on the selection, really Ron? The huge hole in that theory is the fact that Martz is going to have a small window of time to bring his offense to his current underachieving starters, hopefully not get Jay Cutler destroyed behind a very suspect offensive line while trotting out a very average group of receivers. Martz is also under the gun to prove to the fans and the organization that he is still the genius he appeared to be during his time with the St. Louis Rams, while coaching under the very underwhelming and embattled head coach, Lovie Smith. This does not seem to me, with all due respect to Mr Jaworski, to be an ideal or convenient situation to engage in a “project”. I truly believe it is much more likely that Martz will not do anything other than the task at hand (which is win now or go home). All that being said, for a sixth-round pick, the Bears could have done much worse. LeFevour did run a decent offense in a decent program with a pro-style offense at Central Michigan. He managed to get through his college years scandal-free and will not be the reason the Chicago Bears sink or swim this upcoming season. As far as the broadcast of the nfl draft itself, when it comes down to the later rounds, I’m sure that all of the commentators are fatigued and under the gun to drum up excitement and try to maintain some viewership. The local shots of LeFevour and his family as they received the news of him being selected by the Chicago Bears was a very nice moment. It is always good to see teams draft local talent. Mel Kiper is entertaining and very prepared especially in the early rounds. Ron Jaworski is a very good analyst but is much better at breaking down film and dealing with those players who have actually made it to an nfl roster. Overall all the guys in the cast behind the desk do a decent job of breaking down each pick. I am quite sure, however, that as the nfl draft gets a little deeper after the first few rounds it gets harder and harder to watch and broadcast. A big “A” for effort in selling a late-round pick and at least making it decent to watch!
