Dallas Cowboys, Can they Do It?
If nothing else matters, the Dallas Cowboys have a long way to go. America’s Team has a storied past. It all begins with the Super Bowls; 5 Lombardi Trophies.
It was nice that the Cowboys actually finished the regular season on a strong note. It was even better that they won a playoff game. But let’s get real here. It was just a wildcard victory over a team that was just about done anyway. A team that was ready to dump their quarterback and move one.
Sure there are some positives to build on, but there certainly are some question marks. The way the playoffs ended with a thud in Minnesota lingers in the minds of every player, coach and fan.
Really, the question still remains. Can the Cowboys under Wade Phillips get over the hump? Can the Cowboys even make the playoffs this year with all the re-tooling around them in the division and the rest of the NFC?
16 games are a long time and then what happens when November and December roll around? The questions will pop up again. Sure, they’ve won a playoff game, but we’re in Texas. Nothing else matters to fans except the championships. Ask Mack Brown. What have you done for me lately? That’s just the way it is for fans in Jerry World.
And that’s another thing; can you imagine the pressure on this team with the opportunity to play the ultimate game in your own ultimate back yard. The players and coaches and past players and coaches can talk a good game, but it’s another thing entirely to produce it week end and week out and then step it up in the playoffs.
Last season was progress, no doubt about it. But now it’s time to do it all over again, answer all the same nagging questions and deal with the drama that only takes place in Dallas.
It’s been a while, but fans are still used to Super Bowls. They remember the days of Troy, Michael and Emmitt. They haven’t forgotten the domination of the ’90′s and the three Super Bowls that went with it. Most can still remember or have watched videos about Tom Landry, Roger Staubach and the Two Super Bowl Championships in the ’70′s.
This current team is loaded with stars on offensive and defense and no doubt Tony Romo and company will rack up the statistics that would rival any Cowboy team from the past. But victories are what will matter when it comes to the fans and Jerry Jones for that matter.
And not just regular season victories, because it was not too long ago (2007) that the Cowboys had arguably the best team in the NFC with the regular season victories to match it (13). But a first round playoff exit erased the fact that they sent a boat load of players to the Pro Bowl or broke countless team records. They might have well finished 8-8 for the season.
So there you have it; nothing else matters.
