Hunt for Gollum Big Review!
The Hunt for Gollum tells the story of the search for the wily grotesque creature Gollum who has descended into the dark places of the underworld in order to hide himself from those who would take away the ring of power. Although not shown in the movie version of The Lord of The Rings, this film relates the part of the book where Tolkien tells us of the attempt of Gandalf and Aragorn to find the creature Gollum before the forces of Sauron seize him and make him divulge who has the terrible Ring of Power, the “one Ring to rule them all.” This may be a short film but it is full of that familiar vague yet eerie foreboding of terror of Jackson’s films, and we still shudder and shake when we hear that unnerving screeching high pitched screaming warning the Orks and “the Nine” are approaching. We see the hissing and drooling and hear the gurgling guttural grunting of the Orks and see the black-bleeding menacing hoofs of the horses of ‘The Nine” – and we are indeed afraid. The film also does not sell itself short acting wise and Adrian Webster’s Aragorn and Patrick O’Connor’s Gandalf make us believe in the forces of good. Not to be missed: the fight scene between the orks and Aragorn. Fine acting by Adrian Webster as Aragorn and Patrick O’Connor as Gandalf. The film was shot in the thick overgrown Welsh forests laden with mystery and evocative of a misty other worldliness of terror and madness. This film should satisfy the cravings of diehard Lord of the Rings fans for more of Tolkien’s incredibly rich and imaginative wonder-filled world.
