Royal Tyrrell Museum Review: The Dinosaur Museum in Drumheller, Alberta – Is it worth visiting? Part 1
The Royal Tyrrell Museum is an attraction known Canadian tourist near Drumheller, Alberta. It is the only museum in Canada dedicated exclusively to the science of paleontology and operated by the Government of Alberta Ministry Culture and community spirit. The museum is famous for its collection of fossils of more than 120,000 and is one of the largest screens in the world of dinosaurs. Sounds impressive, but is it really worth visiting? There are so many boring, over-priced museums out there so is this one different? I went with my family a few days ago, so I'll give all the facts and can decide for yourself if it's worth the trip.
History
The Royal Tyrrell Museum was named after Joseph Burr Tyrrell, a geologist with 26 years working for the Geological Survey of Canada. On August 12, 1884 Tyrrell met with Canada's first known human-dinosaur herbivore skull, a few miles from where the museum is today. Their discovery led to the first wave of fossil hunting in the desert area in Canada. During the time Alberta became known for its rich fossil resources. Paleontologists from all over Canada and the U.S. came for the best specimens. The years 1910-1917 became known as the "big dinosaur fever."
On September 25, 1985 the Royal Tyrrell Museum was officially opened. Occupying 12,100 meters at a cost of $ 27.5 million, is the largest museum of paleontology in the Western Hemisphere dedicated. In the first year, the museum attracted more than 500,000 visitors. In 1990, the museum was "real" state of Queen Elizabeth II. Now the museum has more than 121,000 square feet and welcomed in August 2010 its 10 millionth visitor.
Exhibitions
There are currently 11 exhibits in the Royal Tyrrell Museum. The first is the Cretaceous Alberta Alberta where you can explore as it was when dinosaurs walked the earth. Then there is the Exhibition Hall of Science, where you can discover the fundamentals of paleontology through practical activities. Preparation Lab is where you can see how the fossils are prepared for research and display. Discover some of the most rare and fragile and scientifically important to the Lord of the Land exhibition. This was one of my favorites because it appears prey some perched atop pedestals, death and dramatic poses a huge Tyrannosaurus Rex, which is the largest known theropod (beast foot) found in North America. Next explore the Burgess Shale and the Devonian reef, the underwater world of Alberta years. The exhibition is the next Terrestrial Paleozoic Cretaceous Garden where you can stroll through the largest collection of prehistoric plants in Canada. Walking from one of the largest collections the world of the dinosaur skeletons in the Hall of Dinosaurs. The Age of Mammals is the latest was to expose the Royal Tyrrell Museum. One of the most well known was is the ice age and in this exhibition you can see a giant mammoths, mastodons and saber-toothed tigers. Children particularly enjoyed this part because one of his films favorites is "Ice Age".
