If you watched the series, you’ll hate it. If you didn’t see the series and just want to watch an interesting movie, you’ll hate it. The characters are butchered into bland boring space fillers in a storyline that can’t decide where it’s going. The random bits of narration from a character who’s not even the main focus of the story seem like a desperate attempt to look like they knew what they were doing. They didn’t Don’t waste your time or money.
i found this movie very boring. i did not enjoy it very well.
In what has to be one of the most backwards career trajectories in history, this once fine director continues to undo his resume. There was the amazing ‘The Sixth Sense,’ the entertaining ‘Unbreakable,’ and the suspenseful ‘Signs.’ These films pointed to a new rising talent in M. Night Shyamalan. Then slowly, through ‘The Village,’ ‘Lady in the Water,’ and especially ‘The Happening,’ his star declined. Now we get this simplistic mess called ‘The Last Airbender.’ The characters are not well-developed, while the effects barely help keep viewer interest. It is a shame to see such talent go to waste.
Since I was introduced to the cartoon series a little late in the season and even though i don’t have much knowledge about the cartoon, the choreography of the moves in the animated version is very unique and very similar to martial arts. It’s just that the moves have been made to incorporate the bending of elements. It’s just that the way Aang moves and the rest of the characters do too. It’s unique in their own ways in the cartoons. I believe that the choreography for the human version of The Avatar the Last Airbender wasn’t as good as the cartoon itself. The producers of the film should have concentrated on that a lot more. The bending of elements should be taken seriously. And slowly showed through out the movie from nation to nation and how Aang learns them all. Like i said, i don’t know much about the first book. All i know is that this movie would have been so much better if the choreography of the human characters were a little bit better. I think the best part of the movie that made me feel like quot;YES! this is what the movie should focus on more.quot; Was the part where Aang came to the place where earth benders were kept. The earth benders showed there true strength when they finally revolted and stood up for one another. I could feel the uplifting feeling inside their hearts and the CG did a fantastic job in doing so. When the earth rose over to block the fire. When the earth came in the push the enemy away. It was done beautifully. The water in the movie was excellent too. I think that the air was okay. Air is strong and vibrant in ways that humans cannot understand. Aang has to show that he has mastered air bending. It was okay in some parts, but for the most part, air bending was moderate. It just needs more whoosh and power. As for the weakest element in the movie that i though wasn’t portrayed right was the fire. The fire bending wasn’t as good as the rest of the elements. When the fire prince bends fire. He uses anger, and very prideful stances to show emotionally that his fire will burn you down. In the movie prince Zuko didn’t do a good enough job. He needed more passion into fire bending. More emotion too would have been better. The fire flew kind of slow. As compared in the animated versions, the fire flew without grace, speed and power. The fire bending was just too slow and disappointing. The movie was truly rushed and not enough was shown to make first time watchers understand what was really going on. I would recommend people who see that the bending is a huge part of the movie to not go because the bending is only moderate. People who are more into seeing and exploring new cinematography should at least take a chance to see this film. Thanks everyone. I would like some feed back too on what you think about this.
im giving it a 3 because i havent even seen it im just reviewing this so i could tell people that rogus doesnt know what hes talking about. silly rabbit
Night thingy silammi-man is sliiping down a slope, next step – he will be uwe boll.
Iacute;ve never seen the serie. I am not fan of the serie. And based on the objectivity than that fact gives me, I can tell you that the movie didnt fullfil my expectations, because I really wanted more, but it was good. I can tell you if it?s just like the book, but this is the first chapter os a triloy, that can really get better, at least, that I hope, that was exactly what happened to Twilight. I recomend it
okay first off i enjoyed the movie i went alone my mom dropped me off and i payed for 3D and let me be the first to say that i enjoyed it.i do agree that there wasnt a lot of 3D in the movie but it was okay.a lot of people on the internet have been complaining about name sayings and story line but i say that just leave it alone.people are getting way to attached to this movie ITS JUST A MOVIE,its just for entertainment.dont go into the movie theater expecting an exact copy of Book One:Water.its not the exact same thing its an adaption to a cartoon series.and yes i have watched all the episodes of the last airbender saga and i thought it was good .So anyway i enjoyes it and i appreciate the people that do and i respect all opinions and if you want to see the last airbender in real life go see this movie
The awesome source material of the highly (and rightfullly) acclaimed animated series is squandered by M. Night Shyamalan. It’s like he’s rushing through a term paper just barely touching all the required bases, just to say it’s done and can get on with something else. Those who loved the animated series should avoid this one. I cringed almost all the way through it — averted my gaze numerous times, was actually pondering taking a nap. Children who had been gushing about it during the pre-show were walking out for food . . . and not coming back in! They were probably the smart ones, sneaking into other movies that didn’t reek.
None of the heart or the soul or the fire of the series translated into this film. It was dead, empty, emotionless, with inane writing. One of the best series for wholesomeness, humour, good writing, rapt attention to detail, rock-solid story-line for both children and adults is probably not going to be able to find a studio now who will take a chance on producing Book 2: Earth or Book 3: Fire.
The Sham tried to re-make too much into his own image that he spoiled it. Revoke his artistic license and let him flip burgers for a living! What’s with the conga-line of numerous earth-benders doing a 5 mintue jig just to get one little rock to float through the air! And his name is Aang! You don’t see directors messing with Wolverine’s name just to make a clever point!
What a horrendous waste of awesome source material.
I’m going to start out by saying that I personally saw Avatar: The Last Airbender from start to finish. Amazing animated series, but now with a very not-amazing movie. You know something is going wrong when the first few sentences being spoken pronounce the title of the show incorrectly. Then you know its even WORSE when you find they pronounce the HERO’s name incorrectly. It’s Ang! A ng! The story itself technically was accurate, but it all was done extremely choppy. And the ethnicity’s for 2 of the groups were mixed up; water benders should have been Indian, fire benders should have been Asian. Apart from these details, the acting in my opinion was also lacking, but it didn’t help that the script seemed very lacking as well. The ONLY good part about this movie were the visuals. The CG was great.
To those who saw the original series: DON’T see this movie. All you will do throughout the entire movie is just cringe at quot;AHngquot; whenever he’s called out, and in general point out all of the flaws.
To those who haven’t: You still may enjoy it, but be prepared to be a little confused. Things aren’t described well enough for those who don’t know whats going on.
This was the best movvie that I have seen this year. The only bad review that I agree with is that the movie is short — but do not blame the director for that, blame the producers. Given the time constraints, I think that they did a very good job in developing the story and are setting up to go into more detail in future movies. There is a lot of material that needed to be put in to prepare for future movies (I hope that there are more..) and this is a distraction from the main story line. This movie goes into more details on the personal struggles of Aang that we do not get until book 3 of the series. Some things are different than the series — that is good.
I love, let me reiterate that, LOVE the animated series. By the end of it I remembered every episode by name number and what happened (as many of you avid fans did). When I heard there was a movie making deal, I was excited!
About a year later I started hearing about the production on the internet and I was distraught. I was worried that they were going to butcher my favorite show. I realized that maybe my excitment was going to become grief.
As I watched the movie I cringed everytime I heard a familiar name pronounced differently, but it didn’t bother me after that. I was dissapointed that some of my favorite parts that I thought were important were not in the movie. But at the end I realized that those moments weren’t as important as I thought. They theme and statement of the story was presented clearly.
I’m trying to tell you fans who I can sympathize with to sit back and realize that it is the same story that you love without some of the quirky moments you love more. Give it a chance.
Give it a chance.
I almost didn’t go to see this movie because of the critic’s reviews. It turns out they were way too harsh. I saw the 2D version so I do not know about the 3D graphics. The story line is the same as the animated version and the acting was just fine. The cinematography was great and the fighting sequences were suspenseful and engaging. I liked it and saw no reason for the brutal beating that it has received by others.
I have been a fan of the series since it was shown on TV. People are making a big deal about the names, who cares. What I had a problem with was the fact that 1.)when the benders were bending, the elemtents didnt flow well with their motions and 2.) the movie felt rushed. Craming 20 episodes into a movie is a difficult task, but to only be 103 minutes is a slap to Avatars face. They cut out so many importants experiances and by the end of the movie it still seems as if Aang, Sokka, and Katarra were still strangers to one another. Also, the director did a poor job in portraying the brother sister rivalry of Zuko and his sister. The spirit world in the movie was un-Godly terrible (no pun intended). They had Aang only talking to one dragon spirit that didnt even exist in the series when Asng incountered many spirits includeing his past life that wasnt even mentioned in the movie. I am looking forward to Book 2: Earth (if they make it, but this time they had better get there S*** straight.
The five of us (13, 12, 10, 42, 38 years old) all LOVED the movie. The critics are idiots! Each of us had something we wished was different however taking the cartoon and making it a movie causes certain changes. Can’t wait for it to come out on DVD!
After waiting 147 days until the midnight showing of The Last Airbender we finally saw the movie and it left us with nothing but disgust. Being a huge fan of the Nickelodean show and seeing the movie was the biggest disappointment for me. To make this simple, I noticed more negative things about the movie than positive which is a shame.
The Good: The martial arts in the movie was what made the movie at least somewhat good, and somewhat enjoyable. Now if you know the show well then you know that it doesn’t take five minutes of martial arts to bend a gust of wind. Also, it made me a little upset that the director, M. Night Shyamalan, decided to have the fire benders bend from a source of fire rather than just being able to bend fire which is kind of the point. Again, I enjoyed the martial arts, but there are a few things I would change.
The Bad: Besides from the martial arts, The Bad resembles basically the entire movie. The movie was completely rushed which was the biggest downfall. For fans and fanatics out there that enjoy the show as much as I do I’m sure none of us would mind a 2 1/2 hour movie based on Avatar; for the M. Night Shyamalan to make the movie only 103 minutes long was completely unnecessary for an entire season. Another complaint focuses on the script where it didn’t sound professional at all. I understand that it is difficult to write an entire movie based on everything that happens in the season, but these are professionals and they should be able to decide what to take out and what to keep in that still follows the storyline of the Nickelodean show; way too much was left out for this movie to follow, let alone to make any sense. I was disappointed that the actors didn’t match their characters in the show. For instance, Sokka was too stiff and didn’t possess any humor like the one in the show, or, Aang was too serious for a twelve year old kid. They sounded too scripted and none of the actors developed any change throughout the movie that made them interesting to watch. The actors themselves do have potential and I believe they can succeed with the parts they were given. It just seemed as if they didn’t spend much time learning their character and the fact that they were not directed well enough. They do have potential and I hope to see them do better in the next movies. For M. Night Shymalan himself, I do not feel he fits the part for directing this movie. He obviously didn’t do his research from the show because it honestly seemed like someone who watched the show sat down with Shyamalan and told him quot;to take notesquot;. I don’t have much to say for this director, but out of respect, I’d like him gone and I’d like a director who knows how to make a movie based on one of the greatest shows. I refuse to watch another The Last Airbender movie if I see his name again.
As a big, big fan of the show, I would not suggest this movie to any fans who haven’t already seen this. It’s not worth the time and money. For those that have seen this movie already, lets just hope that the upcoming Airbender movies are longer, better, make more sense, have better acting and better scripts, have more martial arts, and more of everything all of us expected this previous movie to have.
I must say that if you’re an Avatar fan you have 2 choices. Either don’t go an see it or go see it and understand that you will walkout upset and wondering who in the hell is Ong. Why make this movie so short is beyond me. How can a film maker with so much talent and resources screw this movie up. Is there anything wrong with having an action movie with a little comedy? If you base it on the Tv show then be true to the show. Don’t change crucial parts and characters that will alienate the fans that made the TV show so popular. Whether or not the pronunciation of the names where wrong from the TV show doesn’t matter, these are the names that our kids know, love, and recognize. My son was absolutely confused if that was Aang or not. Then after a while of not hearing his favorite characters name he just became disinterested in the movie completely. And he LOVES the TV show. The TV show had comedy, honor, love, drama, suspense, tragedy, romance, heartbreak, action, and betrayal. The only thing this movie had was betrayal to the true fans and the Avatar. I do hope that Book 2: Earth is made. But I hope that the filmmaker will learn from this and make a better movie for the true fans. They deserve it for supporting the TV show over the years.
being a huge avatar fan I was seriously upset when I left the theater. Because the movie just wasn’t like the show at all. First off the movie’s pace was a disgrace to the humankind. In the movie 70% of the movie was at the north pole. When in the show only 3 out of 20 episodes were at the north pole. Another piss off was that the kyoshi warriors were left out u cant do that. Later in the plot suki their leader plays a big role. Also why would shamylan change the names of the characters that is just dumb all u will acomplish doing that is piss of ur fans. And the way Ong and katara got the waterbending scroll was nowhere near close to how they really got it in the show and they cut out some very important parts of season 1 like The Northern Air Temple, The Warriors of Kyoshi, Jet, and The Winter Solstice Part 1 and 2. Another major problem with the movie was at the end how Ong gets rid of the fire nation in the show he becomes a giant coy fish made of water and wipes out all of the fleet, but in the movie all he does is create a big wave and to make it worse he doesn’t even drop the wave on the fire nation he just holds it up there and waits for them to run away. My last problem was how Zhao died he was drowned in like 10 seconds by 4 waterbenders when in the show Aang the giant coy fish graps him while he is fighting zuko who should not be played by Dev Patel. The only change they made that I think was good was how instead of half year away sozin’s comet was three years away and I think they did that so that the actors could age. Over all the movie standing alone was OK, but based on the show the movie was horrible.
Please comment
Story line seemed rushed. It contains so many scenarios that were farfetched and just plain stupid. If I had paid additional money to see this in 3D I would have been P.O.
avatar the last air bender was a bad movie i went with my family to see the 4:20 show on the first day if you ar planning to see this movie dont if youve watched the series
the movie makes appa look like an ugly peice of sh it also momo i couldnt follow the movie at all.
in conclusion i give the movie a 2/5 raiting.
Hello readers, I went with a group of friends to see this movie during the midnight release. Going into it, I had low expectations because everyone knows that most movies based on a TV show suck horribly. Well first of all when we showed up at the movies, we saw a line so we decided to stand in it. About 5 minutes passed and my one friend noticed everyone else in the line was a little girl… WE WERE IN THE TWILIGHT LINE! We ran thinking we were at the wrong theater. But no, there just wasn’t a line for “The Last Airbender”, guess we were the only dedicated fans in our area. Anyway, we were there kind of early so we were just sitting there watching boring previews, it was then that I fell asleep… luckily I was woken up before the movie started and I was ready for crap to hit the fan, but to my surprise it was the exact opposite.
The movie started and about 5 minutes in, my heart dropped, they rushed through a bunch of stuff in the beginning, and name’s were mispronounced, but later I learned that Shyamalan changed the pronunciation of the names to match how they would actually be said, I know that that’s no excuse but NAMES SHOULDN’T RUIN A MOVIE FOR YOU anyway. And although the beginning was stuck in “fast forward” for a couple of minutes, it did introduce the 3 main characters nicely and get on with the story. After that the movie slowed it’s pace and continued to impress me. For one the character development was extremely good, it let anyone who hadn’t watched the show understand the character’s place in the movie. Another plus to this movie is that it does not miss a single important event from the show. Honestly if you want to watch the first season of Avatar in about an hour and a half to two hours, this movie is the best your getting from Hollywood. It would be hard for them to make a better representation of the show. And to make it even better, it ends right on a cliff hanger, they make you want more. The only problem that I had, was that some of the motions to do the bending were too long and ridiculous. There was this one scene where there were about 5 earth benders all dancing around like crazy and then a single boulder lifted off the ground… and someone else punched it. Whereas sometimes there’s one swift motion and a wall of earth rises. So some of it fits nicely, some of it is just retarded. The other thing that kind of disappointed me was that there was nothing 3-D in it, if you pay for 3-D your getting nothing different. And one complaint that everyone seems to have is the fire benders needing a fire near to use, yes Shyamalan changed it, but for a good reason, when Iroh makes his own fire and the other fire benders freak out, it shows how much more powerful Iroh really is than all the others, it also added more reason for Sozin’s Comet, so it’s really not that bad.
Bottom line, this is one of the few movies that actually follow the original story line and it’s one of the few movies based on a TV show that’s good. The reason people don’t like it so much is that they went in wanting to hate it, you need to watch this adaptation with an open mind and you’ll be happy. I’m definitely going to buy it when it’s out and if you have the money and the time, go see this movie, it’s totally worth it.
~The Narcoleptic Critic
Being a die hard Avatar fan, i walked into the theater ecstatic. Don’t get me wrong i didn’t expect it to be great, because i knew a movie couldn’t accomplish that. Avatar was one of my favorite shows, so it can only be expected I was thrilled for a movie. What i was not prepared for was the horror that befell my eyes, ears, and various other senses last night. I guess Shamylan never got out of the horror business.
First i’ll start with the one thing that this movie did at least mediocre (that’s how bad it was, the best part of it was mediocre), they did in fact stay very true to the story of the show for Book One: Water. They probably could’ve added a little more, cause it was a rather short movie, but overall they stayed very true to the original story.
Now the bulk of my review, why this movie sucked. Why this 5 hour movie (though i was informed by my friends it had only been about 2 hours, it had just felt that long) should not be seen by any living being on this planet. Human or animal, animal or plant, this movie should not be viewed by anyone. Here i go.
First off, why the hell did Shamylan change the names of EVERYTHING. i watched a special on Nickelodeon before i went in which he said he changed the name to the correct Asian pronunciations, and i say to him, what gives you the right? You didn’t come up with the idea for the show, you didn’t name the characters, you didn’t come up with ANY of the original ideas. From the first time i heard them pronounce quot;Ongquot; (aang) quot;Soke-Ahquot; (Sokka) quot;Awe-vatarquot; (Avatar) quot;Ear-Ohquot; (Iro) I wanted to leave. It was a disgrace to the creators and it was a disgrace to everyone watching.
If you were planning on going to this movie to see some quot;sweet, gnary, spectacularquot; fast bending fights, well you’ll be disappointed. EVERYTHING IN THE ENTIRE MOVIE IS SLOW MOTION!!!!!! Every fight scene, every battle, even when they were talking the movie felt slow (lol c wut i did thare?) Also remember in the show when the could just point there hand and BOOM!!!! fire flew out their first, earth crushed their oppenent, wind whipped around the area, or water did something lame, remember that? How quickly people could bend? Well in The Last Airbender, benders do these long, stupid kung-fu quot;dancesquot; that get NOTHING AT ALL accomplished. The part i laughed hardest at is that 6 Earth Benders are doing these complicated, synchronized moves and you think something awesome is gonna happen. Suddenly a rock lifts from the ground about the size of a small t.v……I lol’d
Another thing is the fire bending. Shamylan thought it was unfair that fire benders could make fire from their own chi, so he changed that too. God he made so many good changes to the original show didn’t he? He should’ve written it in the first place. The first bending is pretty lame too, honestly. The fire travels like, 1 mph through the air and still nobody can dodge it.
Now let’s move on to my biggest complaint and yet the one thing that could’ve saved this movie and didn’t: the ending. The epic fight between The Northern Water Temple. In the show, this conflict is solved when Aang, or quot;Ongquot; as M. Night so wants me to say, turns into this huge, awesome water creature that just wrecks everyone. I thought quot;well if they do this in the movie, maybe it will have an ounce of goodquot; because the rest of the movie was so bad. But nope, Aang makes this big huge tidal wave and you think quot;hey maybe he will drown themquot;, but no, he SCARES the fire nation away. They see this big tidal wave and run home like the little pussys they are. and suddenly………..nothing happened. It’s like that all-state commercial nobody likes even the black man has a soothing voice. Oh and Commander Zhao? The most important villain in the first season? ya he gets killed by four randoms who drown him in a random alley. TALK ABOUT CLOSURE!!!
Boy, this movie had everything. Bad acting, bad special effects (yes, on today’s standards, they were pretty bad), what i find interesting is it even had bad writing, even though the entire story was written for them when they started. I don’t understand why they took something so good, so popular, and so brilliant and turned it into complete rubbish. that’s right, i said it, RUBBISH!! *flails arms wildly*
I reccomend this movie to nobody. Unless you are a die-hard Avatar fan like i am and feel you need to see this movie, don’t go. It’s not worth it. There are better things you can spend your money on. Heck go out and buy a 30 dollar poster of Daft Punk and you’ll have spent your money better than you would in this movie. It has maybe 45 seconds of watchable content. And when i left, the audible muttering in the audience let me know it wasn’t just me that hated this movie. It really is that bad.
In conclusion, i give this movie .5/5 stars, just because it sorta followed the story alright. This is the second worst movie i’ve ever seen (after Eragon, which we can all agree was a disgrace to all man kind). Please, i beg you. don’t go see this movie. It’s not worth it. At all. M. Night Shamylan made changes that shouldn’t have been there, and really just destroyed something from my childhood i loved. I truly hope this is the last movie he ever makes……I really do.
