Movie Review Modern Times

Alright, I know this question is asked a hundred times a day everyday, but here goes. Book recommendations?
I haven’t read anything for fun in a really long time, and it’s depressing me. I’m going book shopping tomorrow, and I’d like any recommendations you guys can give!
I don’t really care for genre, just so long as it’s well written. Preferably under 300 pages. And I’m trying to catch up on some modern literature, so that’d be great if you can think of any modern books.
And also, I’ve heard some really good things about some books, but I don’t really know what they’re about so if you could tell me… Life of Pi, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Caroline, the Alchemist, Fight Club (people always give me a look when I say I’ve never seen the movie), the Golden Compass, and the Clockwork Orange. Because I’m far too lazy to go to Google and search for those books, and besides that, you guys give such good reviews:)
You haven’t read The Golden Compass yet?! You know, that’s where I got “Lyra” from. You should read THAT. The His Dark Materials trilogy is utterly mindblowing. And I remember Origin describing it that way, also. Utterly. Mindblowing. I definitely recommend it. They’re fantastic books. And they’re each about 300 pages.
The Golden Compass is about this alternate universe in which everyone has a daemon, a sort of spirit guide in the shape of an animal. In the beginning of the book, Lyra’s friend, Roger, is snatched up by a group called “The Gobblers” who have been snatching up children all over the land. She goes in search of him and, in the process, finds that there is an even more sinister problem in her world- and in others! Dun dun dun….
It’s not a very good summary, but seriously. You have to read it. It’s epic.
