nfl 2010 Draft: Chicago Bears Draft QB Dan LeFevour

What’s my favorite thing about Dan LeFevour? The party his family and friends were having, you got to love it when you see people at a draft party and they’re actually partying. Why not? You want a quarterback who knows how to have a good time, not too good, but someone with a personality. Usually when they show someone at home on the day of the draft it’s some robot sitting with his parents staring at the television, refusing to blink until his name is called. LeFevour wasn’t even in front of the television; he was upstairs looking over at his family and friends celebrating.

On a side note, wouldn’t it of been kind of funny if he accidentally fell over that railing, for all of the America to see? Then you’d get to see his career start and finish in one shot. Just saying…

The debate between Todd McShay and Mel Kiper Jr. on why quarterbacks don’t go as high as they used to is as troubling as Mel Kiper’s hair. The guy has been around forever, yet he is still rockin’ the do of a young Elvis? The reason quarterbacks are no longer going as high is because they’re expensive! Who wants to pay a quarterback 1st round money when history suggests he’ll play like a 7th rounder? Too many high priced quarterbacks have come out of college and not lived up to their price tag. The evaluation of LeFevour was glowing but there’s no way to tell how good he will be, and the Bears didn’t gamble too much on him.

I’m not even sure if the evaluation of LeFevour is accurate? Putting his numbers against any of the top quarterbacks in the draft is simply not fair to him; he played in the Mid-American Conference, against inferior defenses. College football has not become balanced enough that you can start to stack players from smaller schools to ones from the larger programs.

That said, I agree with Jaws, LeFevour may be the luckiest man in the draft. For a quarterback to go into an offense run by the mad genius, Mike Martz is a blessing. Should he ever get into a game, he is going to put up numbers that will make him appear to be a premiere passer in the nfl. Even if he doesn’t get in, he will learn to read coverage, and react fast. Mastering a Martz penned offense can give you the tools needed to actually be a premiere passer in the nfl.

This brings me to my final and most frustrating point. Every time a quarterback is taken in the 6th round, people say the same name, Tom Brady. I hate hearing that name on draft day as much as someone from Indianapolis does in the playoffs. Just because one guy got picked late in the draft by a well coached team, and because of an injury, became a legend (on the field and in the bedroom), doesn’t mean everyone will. In Dan LeFevour’s case, sure he’s a good looking kid, but he’s not going to pull Bridget Moynahan, or Giselle Bundchen, no matter what round he goes in or how may super bowls he wins. Quarterbacks drafted in the 6th round now hove the indelible curse of living up to god-damn Tom Brady’s legacy, and it’s idiotic.
