What is the FAMILY SYSTEMS THEORY about?

For my class, I am to watch a movie and write a review on it relating to the family systems theory. I have chosen to watch 4 Christmases, due to the events the couple (Brad and Kate) go through with their families (parents of both individuals are divorced). I don’t exactly understand what the family systems theory is stating or what we should be relating particular events to. I need to state the trend presented in the movie, and relate it to the family systems theory, and I don’t really understand it!

The family systems theory suggests that individuals cannot be understood in isolation from one another, but rather as a part of their family.
