Predators, directed by Nimrod Antal who also directed Vacancy in 2007 with Luke Wilson & Kate Beckinsale and Armored in 2009 with Matt Dillon and Laurence Fishburne has teamed up yet again with Laurence Fishburne and Adrian Brody (The Pianist, Brothers Bloom & The Experiment) to practically do a remake of the original Predator 1987. At first glance I thought this film would have some authentic concepts with Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Death Proof, Planet Terror and the new unreleased Machete) as producer but failed at every turn. The movie start out as Adrian Brody (Royce), leads a team of 8 rag tag misfits’ who find themselves awaken and stranded on an intergalactic gaming preserve. Upon their arrival they are left to discover what they all have in common, why they were chosen and what is chasing them let alone watching them. This new Predators installment practically mirrors the original Predator’s plot line with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers. The only difference is that instead of taking place on earth, it takes place on another planet with a team of averaged sized non-muscular humans. This film draws too many parallels from the original cast of characters to the plot. If you like movies where you can almost predict which character gets killed next, this movie is for you. I would say this movie is science fiction- Horror hybrid. It’s a classic slasher film that takes place in outer space. There are a few surprises and plot twist but nothing extraordinary. Laurence Fishburne co stars along with Topher Grace; whose career hasn’t taking off since the 70’s Show and Alice Braga (Repo Men) whose character resembles the South American P.O.W from the original film also has keen sense to what the truth is surrounding them to what is haunting/ hunting them. The only good things about this movie are the various types of Predators throughout the film. It’s usually rare in films when you get to see how the antagonist interact amongst themselves, it helped build the insight and psyche of those characters. The special effects are amazing, the one thing this franchise is known for, are all the gadgets armed and commanded by the Predators throughout the film that make them the king of alien terrorist on any planet. The overall story dragged a little and has a couple of holes in the plot if you want to make this movie believable and relevant. If you’re fan of science fiction and the Predators franchise, this movie will not disappoint. Packed with explosions, comedic relief and non-stop action that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, I recommend watching this film, with your buddy’s on movie night. If people still do those things in this day and age. Predator is truly a movie about the survival of the fittest; you have to be smarter, faster and stronger to survive. This film is rated R and has the graphic content of any Saw film, not as disturbing as graphic.
