Selection of Dan LeFevour

The nfl draft is a national holiday for many sports fans around the country. That holiday however, usually consists of the first 2 rounds. By round 6, we have the second string broadcast unit in consisting of Trey Wingo, Ron Jaworski, Mel Kiper, and Todd McShay. Where are Chris Berman, Tom Jackson, and Mike Ditka? My guess is on the first tee at Bethpage Black. Aside from that, the beer is gone; there are empty pizza boxes everywhere, and the house smells like fraternity house after an all night kegger.
The Chicago Bears selected Central Michigan quarterback Dan LeFevour in the 6th round of the 2010 nfl draft with the 181st overall pick. LeFevour, a hometown kid growing up in the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove, Illinois, scored 54 career touchdowns as a quarterback for the Benet Academy Redwings. Recruited by then Central Michigan coach Butch Jones, LeFevour headed to northern Michigan to become quarterback for the Chippewas. He led the Chips to four straight bowl games and became the only player in NCAA history with 12,000 passing yards and 2,500 rushing yards. On top of that, he holds the NCAA record for touchdowns at 149.
As for the Bears grabbing a guy like LeFevour in the 6th round, what a value pick. At 6’3” tall, 230 pounds, he has the perfect quarterback build. He has the size and arm strength to be effective with the size and agility of the players in the nfl. Coming also from a spread offensive system at Central Michigan, Lefevour should be a quick study to the scheme of new Bears offensive coordinator, Mike Martz, who runs a similar style passing attack.
ESPN’s Trey Wingo was spot on in saying that the reaction of the LeFevour family is what makes the nfl Draft. Seeing the family all gathered around the television waiting in anticipation to see if there son, nephew, or grandson’s name is going to be called and when it does, the hugs, tears, and celebratory joy that takes place just gives you goose-bumps. Not everyone that leaves the college game gets drafted, especially from smaller schools like Central Michigan and to see that makes it a little more special. Even if Dan LeFevour doesn’t end up making it in the nfl, he will be able to look back on this moment, smile, and tell his kids, “Hey, I was drafted to play in the NFL.”
What is most disappointing in all of this is the on air spat between Mel Kiper and Todd McShay. Where is the professionalism? Kiper, too irked by McShay’s comments on the timeliness of drafting quarterbacks, sits there acting like his hair gel don’t stink and can’t seem to let the subject go. They look like two brothers fighting over who gets to sit in the front seat of the car. Isn’t your job as a “draft expert”, to give an educated, professional opinion about the draft meanwhile being open to other theories of thought from other so called “experts”? Don’t get me wrong, both of these guys know what they are talking about when it comes to football. But this lapse in professionalism, with in my opinion more blame on Kiper, marred the selection of Dan Lefevour.
