Sports Review/Dodger Baseball
It is a good idea for a team video collage, but in typical McCourt fashion, a lot on the cheap side. It was performed by a group I’ve never heard of. They sound like the group that did the free credit report commercial. The style does not represent the diversity of Los Angeles. Los Angeles is the melting pot of the world, not Salt Lake City, Utah. Some of the featured players are up and coming talented young players which is good, (Kemp, Loney, Billingsley) but mostly players that are retired for several years, (Shaw, Garciapara ,) out of baseball because of steroid use, (Gagne) or players who are now on other teams(Lowe, Wolf) because the Dodgers could not afford to keep them.
This brings me to the current problem the team has. The owners. The McCourt’s.They purchased the team a few years ago extremely leveraged, which means they borrowed a lot of money. During their brief tenure the team has been moderate successful, winning a couple of division titles and making the playoffs several times, but not winning the World Series. The McCourt’s always gave impression they would never, ever spend big money on free agents to get the team over top. Which is what the Yankees do? For example if a top free agent player was available. Dodger fans knew that not even were the dodgers not interested, they would not even feign interest, they would sign players on the lower scale to give the illusion they were signing free agents to improve the team. It looks like the McCourt’s are more interested in profits, which is their right as owners. To maintain their Los Angeles lifestyle, which is funny considering they are from Boston.
Now with the McCourt’s getting a divorce, the details are coming out that that the reason they weren’t spending money on the team. They were spending money on themselves. A million dollar house just so they can do their laundry. Have they heard of fluff and fold? A Russian psychic to predict the team’s future. How about using that money on a big bat on the bench. Expensive personal trainers to make themselves look good. How about a run down the stairs of your stadium and Botox? There is doctor on every corner who can do that.
For such a historic and successful franchise, which has had hall of fame players, managers and owners. A franchise that has provided baseball with memorable lasting moments. Located in large market with a beautiful ball park, that draws annually almost four million people. It is a shame the McCourt’s act like they are in a mid-market and don’t have to spend money on players, because the fans don’t have anything better to do in the summer. I only hope that the judge in the McCourt’s case make them sell off all their assets, including the Dodgers, so a new, billionaire local owner, can provide the team the money it needs, so it can compete with baseballs bests, the Yankees, Red Sox and even the Los Angeles Angels.
