The Sequel to Toy Story
When I first heard they were making another sequel to Toy Story, I was both elated and concerned. While I loved the first two movies, I wondered how much of a story was left to tell. Toy Story 2 was one of those rare instances where the sequel was as good, if not better, than the original. Only a handful of those exist in the history of Hollywood and I thought they might be pushing their luck with a 3rd installment of the franchise. This trailer soothed all my fears.
The sight of all the familiar toys brought an instant smile to my face. Buzz, Woody, Jessie, Rex, Hamm and the Potato Heads are all back and better than ever. The playful banter and clever jokes are ever present as these characters have grown into a real family. I especially like how they all immediately look to Buzz and Woody whenever things get tough. Buzz is the take charge, cocky commander while Woody remains the heart and conscience of the group. The Toy Story movies have always had a multitude of great characters to play with but always manage to give them all an individual moment to shine. That is the reason we all love these toys so much.
The creative minds at Pixar have managed to find the perfect theme for this movie. Enough time has gone by that Andy is now ready for college so the toys are once again faced with being left behind or replaced in his life. This has been the recurring theme though out the trilogy and, in these creators’ capable hands, it’s never failed to entertain. With this strong concept, I have every faith that they will deliver. Apparently, this movie takes the wayward toys to a day care center where they are besieged by an army of little kids. That should be good for more than a few laughs.
It was good to see so many humans in this trailer. To be honest, I always found the humans in the first two movies to be a little creepy and awkward. The animation wasn’t quite as good as it is for the toys and inanimate objects, but they seem to have rectified that for this movie. Andy, Mom and all the little kids at the day care center look much more human and natural than before. While not intended to be ultra-realistic animation, the facial expressions and details evident in the trailer make the people look much more life like.
All in all, this trailer has made me very excited to see this movie! I can’t wait to see Spanish Buzz and the day care massacre. Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head really need to pull themselves together. It contains action, comedy while retaining the heart that has always been the biggest and most important element of the Toy Story franchise. While the trailer didn’t give too much away, you know this will be the biggest and wildest adventure yet. Whatever happens to them and wherever they end up, you know they will all be together.
The Toy Story movies have always had a magical ability to take you back in time. Back to the time when you spent your days in your room playing with your toys. The carefree hours whiled away as you created ever changing scenarios to pit your heroes against their arch enemies. Back then, anything was possible and you could always figure out a way to have a happy ending. In these troubling times, isn’t that what we all need more than ever? I, for one, can’t wait to take the trip back to my room with Buzz, Woody and the gang in Toy Story 3.
