With the 12th Pick of the 6th Round, The Chicago Bears Select Dan LeFevour?
In a surprising move, the Chicago Bears selected Central Michigan’s Dan LeFevour with the 12th pick of the 6th round in the 2010 draft. LeFevour, a 6’3, 230 pound record setting dual quarterback and 4 year starter, was once perceived as a solid mid-round pick. However, while attending the nfl Combine, LeFevour refused to do the quarterback passing drills because he wasn’t “familiar” with the receivers; this led to him falling out of favor with scouts because of his perceived lack of arm strength and poor deep ball. Some scouts also called into question the competition he played against at the non-BCS level. It should be noted that he played well against “Big Six” foes Michigan State, Purdue and Georgia over his last three years, including passing for 292 yards and 4 touchdowns in a 51-48 bowl loss that also saw him rush for 114 yards and two scores. New offensive coordinator Mike Martz is known as an excellent evaluator of talent, and with Jay Cutler entrenched as a starter; the Bears can afford to bring him along slowly. LeFevour must work out his release issues, as well as learn how to read from the line and adjust while dropping back. After playing almost exclusively in the shotgun, there are plenty of holes in his game that must be corrected to be successful at the nfl level. Despite this, his intangibles make him a worthwhile late pick. He closed out his career rewriting almost all of his school and conference’s passing, total offense and quarterback rushing records. LeFevour is in “elite” company in the NCAA record books, as he joined Vince Young of Texas as the only players to ever throw for over 3,000 yards and rush for over 1,000 yards in the same season. After just three seasons at the helm for Central Michigan, he became the 12th player in NCAA annals to register over 4,000 yards passing and over 2,000 yards rushing. Some quick stats:
