What would be the best tools to hand carve a wooden chess set?

I've been interested in the hand of the size of my own chess set wood and cardboard, but have no experience in wood carving. A game of chess has 64 pieces and I think it could be hard on the hands without the right tools for carving small wooden, so I wonder what kind of tools would be best for that. I'd also be grateful for any advice the type of wood to use and / or suggestions stain / gloss. Thanks in advance for your answers, Yahoo Answers community.

the smaller tools. are made in all sizes. and carved by hand is difficult in your hands forever. a good solid wood such as oak or something is good for something you want to last.
